May 14 House Party at Jeff Campbell’s Home
Twenty-two corporators and their guests attended a wine-tasting at the home of Jeff Campbell, Concord corporator, to introduce his friends on Nashawtuc Hill to Emerson Hospital. Christine Schuster presented an overview of the services available at the hospital.
May 17 Corporator Dinner
Sixty corporators and their guests attended the first corporator dinner event. Ed Chung, MD, director of Emerson’s pediatric hospitalists, shared the story of a child who was admitted through the Emergency Department with an acute asthma attack, highlighting all of the pediatric services that were brought to bear to stabilize and treat the child.
June 5 Emerson Hospital Auxiliary 5K Run~Walk for Cancer & Family Fun day
A record-breaking $30,000 was raised this year to benefit the Bethke Cancer Center. The big increase in funds was due to the fact that nine Emerson Hospital teams raised more than $14,000 of the total. More than 380 participants enjoyed a “family funday,” where families exercised together while raising money for a good cause, enjoying a healthy barbeque and taking a dip in a refreshing pool.
June 28 Philip W. Cheney Conference Room Dedication

On a beautiful summer day in June, Emerson Hospital’s North Assembly Rooms where dedicated and renamed in memory of Philip W. Cheney, long-time corporator and hospital board member. Family, friends, hospital staff, physicians and volunteers joined in to celebrate the dedication of this room in honor of Phil’s significant contributions to Emerson Hospital.
Corporators In Your Town
Working in partnership with its corporators, Emerson Hospital expanded its presence at various fairs, festivals, farmer’s markets and parades this past summer.
Terry Symula, Harvard corporator, organized Emerson Hospital’s appearance at Harvard’s Wellness Day, held for seventh-graders and their parents on June 14 at the Harvard town common. Approximately 90 students and their families attended seminars to learn how to stay healthy and well. Emerson supported the event with an information table and distributed pedometers, hand-sanitizers and first aid kits.
Mike Rosenberg, Bedford corporator, organized and scheduled Emerson Hospital’s appearance at the Bedford Farmer’s Market on June 27. Irma Carter and Paul Purchia, Bedford corporators, manned the Emerson information table and encountered many visitors who described their positive experiences with Emerson and the hospital’s physicians. Many who stopped by were either new to the area or long- time residents who were happy to hear about Emerson Medical at Bedford on North Road.

Beth Kubacki, Carlisle corporator, organized Emerson Hospital’s appearance at Carlisle’s July 2 Old Home Day event, which was attended by more than 400 people. While Ms. Kubacki worked the Emerson information table, many visitors told her how much they appreciate Emerson. One woman stopped by just to say how much she was enjoying her two new hips. A family stopped by to report that all four of their children were born at Emerson. Lastly, several Old Home Day participants commented on how wonderful the emergency department is. In summary, everyone was very complimentary of the hospital.
Summer Coffee/Dinner and Conversation with Christine Schuster
Throughout the summer, Christine Schuster, president and CEO of Emerson Hospital, met with new corporators in small groups at the hospital. This provided an opportunity for corporators to learn the latest news on hospital activities and business while interacting with Ms. Schuster in a one-on-one setting.
August 3 Hermel Breast Health Center Dedication
Emerson board members, corporators, medical staff and guests gathered to dedicate the Mortimer B. Hermel, MD, Breast Health Center at 747 Main Street, Concord. Dr. Hermel, who practiced radiology in Philadelphia, was among the pioneers who first encouraged the use of x-rays to detect breast cancer. Dr. Hermel was the father-in-law of Steven Steinberg, lead donor, along with his family and the Steinberg-Lalli Charitable Foundation. Christine Schuster, Emerson president and CEO, emceed the event, which included remarks by Dr. Hermel’s daughter, Nancy Steinberg, and by David Rose, MD, Emerson chief of radiology. Dr. Rose presented a historical overview of mammography, including the contributions of Dr. Hermel, and spoke about the advances in breast cancer detection available at Emerson.
