Members of the Board
Paul Birch, treasurer and chair of Finance Committee, is a Carlisle resident and a private investor, advisor and business owner. He was previously President, CEO and director of GEAC Computer Corporation, prior to that he was EVP, CFO and director of MRO Software Inc. Paul’s career started in public accounting with 10 years with Coopers & Lybrand and Arthur Andersen & Co. He currently serves as a Director of Double Take Software (NASDAQ; DBTK), and Chair of; nimbit Inc., and CommonAngels. Mr. Birch also serves on the Emerson Health Care Foundation. He is a member of the Lake Sunapee Protective Association Investment Committee.
Philip W. Cheney is a resident of Concord with extensive experience in the application of leading-edge technology to complex engineering problems. At the time of his retirement from Raytheon, then the nation’s third-largest defense company, he was vice president of engineering and quality management, focusing on Raytheon’s extensive independent and US government-sponsored research and development activities. Dr. Cheney is a member of the faculty at Northeastern University in Boston. He lives in Concord.
Gloria Clough is a clinical specialist in psychiatric and mental health with a private practice in Concord. She received her RN from the Roger Williams General Hospital School of Nursing and her MS in nursing from Boston College. She also holds a BS with a concentration in psychology from St. Joseph’s College and a masters of divinity from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology. Ms. Clough established the first chaplaincy program at Emerson in 1991 and served from 1991 – 1995. She is a resident of Concord.
Paul D’Ambrosio, MD, is a lifelong resident of Concord. He was born at Emerson Hospital. After graduating from Harvard College and Tufts Medical School, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital of Boston. In 1991, he co-founded Concord Internal Medicine Associates. Dr. D’Ambrosio has served on the IPA Board and has been chair of the PHO Board since its inception. He served on the hospital's Strategic Planning Committee and the Physician Advisory Group. He is currently a Board member of Partners Community Healthcare Inc. Dr. D’Ambrosio is also the physician leader of the Emerson electronic health record project and is on the board of the Emerson Foundation. Dr. D’Ambrosio lives in Concord with his wife, Fredel, and their two children.
James DiGiovanni of Concord is a real estate developer and property manager with Period Realty Trust, a family business founded in 1964. Period Realty Trust builds, owns, manages and maintains residential and commercial buildings in Concord and surrounding communities. Jim has served as an Emerson Hospital Corporator since 1992. Also, he has been active in the Concord Lions Club and has served on a number of town building committees (Holy Family Parish, Concord Library). Jim was formerly on the board of governors at the Milldam Condominium Association. He is currently a member of the Rental Housing Association and co-chair of the Concord Economic Council. He is also a corporator of the Middlesex Savings Bank and is on the board of directors of the Concord Business Partnership. Jim and his wife, Nanine, have one daughter and two sons.
Donald A. Driscoll, Jr., MD, is the president elect of the medical staff and an orthopedic surgeon practicing in Concord. He has been a member of the Emerson Hospital active staff since June of 1986 and has served as the chief of orthopedics, chairman of the department of surgery and was elected by the medical staff as At Large Member of the Hospital’s Board in the early 1990s. Dr. Driscoll is a Foundation board member, and he is part of the medical staff team that is fundraising for Project SCORE. He has a BA from Harvard College and his MD from Tufts University. He completed his residencies at New England Deaconess Hospital and the New England Medical Center and his fellowship in total joint replacement at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Driscoll lives in Concord and is involved with high school sports teams in the Acton/Boxborough and Concord-Carlisle districts.
Rose Ann Giordano, chair of Governance Committee, is an Acton resident and is a self-employed high tech consultant. She formerly served as vice president of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Compaq Computer’s Customer Services Division and had a 19-year career in management with Digital Equipment Corporation. At Digital, Ms. Giordano was the first woman vice president and corporate officer. She serves on the board of directors of TimeTrade Inc., the MIT Enterprise Forum and serves on the Advisory Board of the National Association of Corporate Directors.
Eric R. Haartz is CEO of Haartz Corporation, an Acton-based manufacturer of engineered coated materials for the automotive and marine industries. A resident of Concord, he is involved with the Middlesex West Chamber of Commerce School-Business Partnership Committee. Mr. Haartz is also active in the Horseless Carriage Car Club of America.
Winston R. Hindle, Jr., secretary and chair of Audit Committee, is a Concord resident and a retired senior vice president of Digital Equipment Corporation. He joined Digital in 1962 as assistant to the president and founder, Kenneth Olsen. A graduate of Amherst College, he received his master’s degree from MIT Sloan School. Mr. Hindle is a board member of two private companies, a trustee of the Concord Museum and former chair of the board of Wheaton College in Norton, Mass.
Mary Johnson, chair of Compensation Committee, is a long-time resident and leader of the Concord community. She has worked as a nurse educator, direct caregiver, special needs tutor, retail manager, and as a volunteer for hospice and prison outreach. She served as president/chair of a variety of Concord-area economic development and housing organizations including the Concord Chamber of Commerce, Belknap House, and the Concord Carlisle Community Chest. Mary has served on boards for the Concord Youth Alliance, Concord Millennium Committee, New England Deaconess, Concord Council on Aging and Concord Tourism Task Force. She currently chairs the Concord Housing Authority and serves on the town’s Economic Development Committee, the Concord Restorative Justice Program and the board of Carleton Willard Village.
Ronald H. Johnson, chair of Emerson Health System Foundation, is a Westford resident who is retired as executive vice president of PhotoMetrics Inc. in Woburn. Long active in the civic affairs of Westford, he has served as a member of the School committee, Board of Selectman, Finance Committee, and Zoning Board of Appeals.
Joan Burden Litle is the founder and president of The Catalog Connection, a merchandise and creative consulting firm specializing in the consumer catalog and on-line markets. Ms. Litle started her career with Talbots and was formerly president of Clymer’s of Bucks County, a national gift and apparel catalog. She is an active participant in the direct marketing industry and a frequent speaker on catalog merchandising and creative design. She has taught at New York University, is a member of the Direct Marketing Association and sits on several local and national boards. She serves on the Emerson Health Care Foundation and she is a resident of Concord.
John M. Lowe III, chairman of the Board, is associate professor and chair of Health Care Administration at Simmons College. A graduate of Duke University, he earned his MS in Health Services Administration from The Ohio State University, and his PhD in Public Policy Analysis from the University of Illinois. Currently he is chair of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and a member of the Trustee Advisory Council of the Massachusetts Hospital Association. He is a resident of Concord.
Amaresh Mahapatra of Acton is president of Linden Photonics, a company he co-founded in 2002. Linden Photonics manufactures a range of optical fiber cable for use by agencies of the defense department and their contractors as well as by advanced technology firms. Dr. Mahapatra became a Corporator of Emerson Hospital in 2004. Dr. Mahapatra and his wife, Sadhana, have three children.
Stephen G. Pearse is a principal with investment firms Yucatan Rock, Inc. and Common Angels, and sits on the boards of Intrusic, Sereniti and C4RJ. Stephen was CEO of Cyras Systems, and was EVP and General Manager of Bay Networks/Nortel Networks’ Internet/Telecom Business Group. Previously, Stephen held senior positions at Time Warner Telecom and Sprint. Stephen holds an MBA from MIT Sloan School, an MSEE from Stevens Institute of Technology, and a BSME from Georgia Tech. He is active in philanthropy and volunteerism and is a resident of Concord.
David I. Rose, MD, president of the medical staff, is the Chairman of Radiology and Director of Breast Imaging. He has been a physician at Emerson since 1999. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He also completed fellowship training in mammography at Brigham and Women’s and in oncoradiology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Rose is board-certified in radiology. He lives in Sudbury with his wife and four children.
Ian Crocker Sanderson, chair of Investment Committee, is managing director of Institutional Research for SG Cowen Securities Corporation and is the Senior Equity Research Analyst for Pharmaceuticals. He has been recognized by Institutional Investor as a member of the Analyst All-Star Team for Specialty Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Sanderson is a graduate of Williams College and received his MBA from The Wharton School.
Christine Schuster, president and CEO of Emerson Hospital, has more than 20 years of experience in health care. Prior to serving as president and CEO of Quincy Medical Center, Ms. Schuster served as president and CEO of Athol Memorial Hospital and vice president and chief operating officer of the Tenet Saint Vincent Healthcare System in Worcester, Mass. Ms. Schuster served as the director of critical care services at the New England Deaconess Hospital. She also spent five years as a healthcare management consultant with Coopers and Lybrand. Ms. Schuster received an MBA, with honors, from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and a BS in nursing from Boston University.
Michael J. Zak, vice chair, is a general partner at Charles River Ventures, where he serves as the principal sponsor for investments in a number of information technology markets. In 2002, he was recognized as the Venture Capitalist of the Year by the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council. He has a BS degree in engineering from Cornell University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Michael has served as a board member of a foundation affiliated with his alma mater.
