Emerson Hospital nuclear medicine receives accreditation from American College of Radiology
(CONCORD, Mass., August 26, 2008)--Emerson Hospital was awarded a three-year term of accreditation in nuclear medicine after a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Emerson underwent the vigorous review and had to submit 12 patient studies, quality control and patient images, and radiology interpretations. As part of the process, Emerson also had a medical physicist conduct extensive testing on all the equipment and review policies and procedures.
Nuclear medicine uses radioactive materials to diagnosis and treat illnesses. Nuclear medicine produces images that reflect biological and physiological functions that take place at the cellular and sub-cellular level of the internal system being studied, which differs from traditional anatomical imaging such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists and nuclear medicine and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
