Dr. Donald Driscoll, an orthopedic surgeon, recently became president of Emerson’s medical staff. Elected by his peers as president-elect two years prior to taking office as president, Dr. Driscoll will serve a two-year term that began October 1.

Emerson Hospital cardiac rehabilitation program receives national certification
Emerson Hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation program was recently certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). AACVPR certification signifies that Emerson’s program meets the essential standards for quality patient care in cardiac rehabilitation, including exercise programming, risk factor education, psychosocial well-being, and nutrition. Emerson offers diabetes education class
Emerson Hospital will offer a new type of diabetes education class in January and February 2010. Called conversation mapping, the class is a new, interactive way for patients to learn more about diabetes. A conversation map is a series of images and metaphors on a tabletop display that health care professionals use to engage groups of patients in dialogue around a health care topic. In conversation mapping, patients participate in interactive activities to identify facts and myths about the health care topic and uncover information related to the health condition, ultimately resulting in behavior change.
Emerson Hospital to kick off holiday season with annual Tree of Lights on December 8
The Emerson Hospital Auxiliary will hold its annual Tree of Lights ceremony on Tuesday, December 8, at 4:30 p.m. Members of the community are invited to join Emerson staff and patients for a brief program in the North Assembly Room at the hospital, followed by the tree lighting in front of the White House. A reception of light refreshments will follow in the North Assembly Room. Parking validation will be provided.
Emerson Hospital adds midwifery service, expands delivery options for new moms
New mothers at Emerson now have more delivery options with the addition of Sherri Perivolotis, Certified Nurse Midwife, to Emerson’s Birthing Center staff. Perivolotis, CNM, MSN, joins the practice of Dr. Ingrid Balcomb and A.F.A. Obstetrics and Gynecology, which is located at Emerson.
Annual meeting showcases Emerson Hospital Auxiliary's record of accomplishments
The Emerson Hospital Auxiliary recently hosted its 85th annual meeting at the Nashawtuc Country Club. Denise Haartz, outgoing Auxiliary president, convened the business portion of the meeting. 11th annual Auxiliary golf tournament raises $55,000
The Emerson Hospital Auxiliary recently hosted its 11th annual golf tournament at the Nashawtuc Country Club. The event, which raised $55,000, was again sold out with 130 participants. The last 11 tournaments raised more than $750,000 to fund important Auxiliary-sponsored programs at Emerson Hospital.

In the span of six hours, Marieke Kreps transformed anguish into artwork. With tissue paper, Kreps, an interior designer, created a collage depicting hands that heal and love that, in partnership with the science of medicine, can save.
Museum-quality art now on display at Emerson's Sudbury facility
Patients and visitors can view museum-quality artwork at Emerson Medical at Sudbury. Through Emerson’s participation in the DeCordova Sculpture Park + Museum’s Corporate Art Program, original artwork hangs on both levels of the facility, which is located on Route 20 in Chiswick Park. The installed exhibition features artwork from the museum’s permanent collection as well as artist-loaned work; exhibitions are rotated to ensure a continuously stimulating and educational environment.

Joseph Bergen, DO, FACEP, was recently elected president of the Massachusetts College of Emergency Physicians (MACEP). Dr. Bergen will serve a one-year term beginning in May.
Emerson physician honored at spring benefit
The Virginia Thurston Healing Garden recently honored two local cancer care physicians at its spring benefit auction. Needham resident Dr. Jon DuBois, hematologist-oncologist and chair of the cancer committee at Emerson’s Bethke Cancer Center, was recognized at the event, along with Dr. Margaret Duggan of the Faulkner Hospital Breast Centre.
Emerson cancer program approved by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons
The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer has again granted three-year approval with commendation to the Bethke Cancer Center. A facility can receive three-year approval following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor, during which the facility demonstrates continued compliance with 36 standards.
General Surgeon joins Emerson Hospital
Dr. Brian T. Callahan, Jr., a general surgeon, recently joined Emerson Hospital.

Emerson Hospital will hold its ninth annual 5K Run-Walk for Cancer on Sunday, June 14, 2009, starting at 10:00 am at the Concord Health Care Center at the corner of Route 2 across from Emerson. The event is sponsored by the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary. This year’s honorary chair of the Run-Walk committee is Faith Pulis, CEO of The Thoreau Club.
Emerson Hospital to host day of free health screenings
Emerson Hospital will host a health day on May 2 from 9:00 am – 1:30 pm in the Bethke Cancer Center. The event, formerly known as Cancer Awareness Day, will include free screenings, tours of new operating rooms and private maternity suites, cancer and general health information, conversations with health and wellness experts, refreshments, and more. Registration is required for skin cancer, thyroid, prostate specific antigen (PSA) and lipid profile/cholesterol screenings. No registration is required for blood pressure, diabetes, and respiratory screenings.

Emerson Auxiliary makes a difference for Bethke patients
The Emerson Hospital Auxiliary recently donated $18,000 to Emerson Hospital’s Bethke Cancer Center. This donation will enhance patient support programs. Along with this monetary donation, the Auxiliary wanted to support patients directly, so they launched the comfort quilts gift program, which was started in 2005.
Emerson Hospital offers workshop for children dealing with parent’s cancer diagnosis
Emerson Hospital will offer a free family workshop for children ages 3-15, titled “Helping Children Cope When a Parent Has Cancer.” Facilitated by Emerson Hospital social services, the pediatric intervention team, and nurses from Commonwealth Hematology-Oncology and Massachusetts General Hospital radiation oncology, the workshop (for parents and children) will be held on April 4, 2009, from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm with a pre-workshop orientation for parents on March 31, 2009, and a follow-up for parents on April 7, 2009.

New operating rooms look to the future. The impressive upgrade of Emerson Hospital’s entire surgical facilities—a multi-year project that has received substantial philanthropic support—is now complete. Emerson Auxiliary Tree of Lights and cookie sale add holiday cheer to hospital
The Emerson Hospital Auxiliary’s recent Tree of Lights ceremony raised $4,000 for the hospital. During the event, which is held annually and allows members of the community to donate a light on the tree in memory of a loved one, to honor a special person, or to celebrate the season, Auxiliary President Denise Haartz and Emerson Hospital president and CEO Christine Schuster reflected on the season and on the Auxiliary tradition. After some prayers led by Emerson Chaplain Georgia Leiner, seasonal songs were performed by the Bedford vocal group “Music Among Us.”
