Mary Lou LoVecchio art displayed by Emerson Hospital Auxiliary

From December 5, 2011 - February 5, 2012, the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary will display the artwork of Mary Lou LoVecchio of Concord. LoVecchio is a Corporator of Emerson Hospital and has lived in Concord for 32 years. She minored in art at Georgian Court College in New Jersey but had not focused on her painting until her retirement from teaching in the Sudbury Public Schools. She has studied watercolor painting at the DeCordova Museum School and more recently, she has studied watercolor with Marla Greenfield, an award-winning watercolorist. LoVecchio attributes her growth as a painter to Greenfield’s instruction. Read More

Centennial Ball raises $427,000 in support of pediatric care

As the culmination of its centennial year, Emerson hosted a dinner dance at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel. The event, titled “Centennial Ball: A Big Party to Benefit Little Patients,” fell on the actual anniversary date of the dedication of the hospital in 1911. In total, $427,000 was raised to support the redevelopment of an expanded, enhanced pediatric department. Ball attendees enjoyed live music by the band Soho, a four-course gourmet meal, and a silent auction with prizes including travel and adventure experiences, professional sports tickets, and more. Read More

Auxiliary's annual Cookies by the Pound set for December 12

The Emerson Hospital Auxiliary will hold its annual Tree of Lights ceremony on Monday, December 5, at 4:30 p.m. The event is open to the public. Grant supports purchase of infant CPR kits

Thanks to a recent grant from the Alice Eaton Fund, babies who stay in Emerson Hospital’s special care nursery are going home with an infant CPR kit. The funding for the innovative pilot program also includes in-hospital training for parents by nursing staff. Alice Eaton, a Stow resident who died in 1992, left funds to support care for area children. Read More

Emerson Hospital names director of hospital medicine program

David Handin, M.D., was recently named director of the hospital medicine program at Emerson Hospital. Dr. Handin has been a full-time hospitalist at Emerson for the past seven years. “Dr. Handin is well-respected by the physician and nursing staff as a superb clinician and compassionate caregiver,” said Greg Martin, M.D., chief medical officer and senior vice president of clinical affairs at Emerson Hospital.  Read More

Verrill Farm to hold Harvest Festival to benefit Emerson Hospital pediatric unit

The Verrill Farm Harvest Festival to benefit Emerson Pediatric Care will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2011, from noon to 4:00 p.m. Proceeds from this festival will benefit coping kits distributed by Emerson Hospital’s pediatric intervention team. The kits are colorful bags of therapeutic toys given to children who enter the hospital through the emergency department or upon admission to the pediatric unit.  Read More

Emerson offers diabetes education class

Emerson Hospital will offer a series of four group diabetes education classes in October. Called conversation mapping, the class is a new, interactive way for patients to learn more about diabetes. A conversation map is a series of images and metaphors on a tabletop display that health care professionals use to engage groups of patients in dialogue around a health care topic. In conversation mapping, patients participate in interactive activities to identify facts and myths about the health care topic and to uncover information related to the health condition, ultimately resulting in behavior change. Read More

Kristen Donovan art displayed by Emerson Hospital Auxiliary

From August 15 through October 17, 2011, the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary will display art by Kristen Donovan of Stow, Mass. Donovan is a graduate of Boston College with a degree in studio art and art history. A classically-trained artist, Kristen studied from age six under Jean and Henry Lee. As well as being a professional artist, Donovan enjoys teaching art in her studio and at the Council on Aging in Stow, where she shares her talents with seniors.  Read More

New physician joins sleep medicine, pulmonology, and critical care services at Emerson Hospital

Dr. Ramesh Donepudi recently joined the medical staff at Emerson Hospital. He earned his medical degree from Rangaraya Medical College in India. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Lahey Clinic and a fellowship in sleep disorders at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He also trained in the United Kingdom in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine.  Read More

Bonnie McGrath art displayed by Emerson Hospital Auxiliary

From June 15 - August 15, the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary will display the artwork of Bonnie McGrath of Acton, Mass. After graduating from the Acton school system, Bonnie attended the Massachusetts School of Art (now Massachusetts College of Art and Design) in Boston, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in fine art. She went on to take courses in photography and painting, and for many years this was the focus of her work. However, 10 years ago she returned to her other passion—watercolor painting. For more than 30 years, Bonnie has made note cards, magnets, bookmarks, and matted prints to sell in local stores. She has had many group and one-person gallery shows and is author of the classic photography book titled “Walden Pond, Reflections of Henry David Thoreau.” Read More

Emerson Hospital Auxiliary Run-Walk raises record amount

The Emerson Hospital Auxiliary recently held its 11th annual 5K Run-Walk for Cancer and Family Fun-Day. The event was jointly sponsored by The Thoreau Club and Marx Running of Acton. The Run-Walk drew almost 450 people and raised more than $42,000—the largest amount of money ever raised in the history of the Run-Walk. From June 15 through August 15, the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary will display photographs by Robert Moll. Now retired, Moll is from Chelmsford and has been a commercial photographer for 40 years. He has an extensive portfolio of photography shot for magazines and catalogs—first in New York for 25 years and then in New England for 15 years. Read More

From June 14-16, the Mane Escape Salon and Spa at 37 Thoreau Street in Concord will donate a percentage of their revenues to benefit Emerson Hospital. This promotion is the result of a partnership forged between the salon and the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary. “These events are a win-win for us and the participating businesses,” said Anne Lehmann, president of the Auxiliary. “They generate customers for the businesses and raise funds for the Auxiliary.”  Read More

Mass. Eye and Ear welcomes Dr. Ayesha N. Khalid, an otolaryngology-head and neck surgeon and a resident of Concord, Mass., to its new Mass. Eye and Ear, Concord, location. Dr. Khalid joins Mass. Concord artist renews her love of the local area

Carole Parrish loves to paint images of Cape Cod. She was born in Boston and has lived most of her life there. But, for 20 years, she lived in Ohio—land-locked and far away from the ocean and beaches that she loved. During that time, her appreciation and love for the Massachusetts landscape was heightened. Although she believes her time in Ohio was “rich and wonderful,” she saw her return to Boston as a real homecoming. Read More

Emerson Hospital Auxiliary goes international

When Concord resident Jeannette Taylor was describing her forthcoming trip to an orphanage in northwestern Burma, she mentioned wanting to bring something fun for the children. Liz Berk, Emerson Hospital Auxiliary member, suggested a teddy bear—like those given by the Auxiliary to pediatric patients at Emerson. Berk has sewn the bears for many years, and so she sought permission to use the pattern. Soon enough, they had 20 bears cut from flannel, sewn, and ready to be stuffed by the children in Burma. Read More
