11/3/09: Emerson Hospital adds midwifery service, expands delivery options for new moms

New mothers at Emerson now have more delivery options with the addition of Sherri Perivolotis, Certified Nurse Midwife, to Emerson’s Birthing Center staff. Perivolotis, CNM, MSN, joins the practice of Dr. Ingrid Balcomb and A.F.A. Obstetrics and Gynecology, which is located at Emerson.

“I am excited to be able to bring midwifery to the Emerson community,” said Perivolotis, herself a mother of six children, including triplets. “The hospital has made a significant investment in women’s health and their support of midwifery services is an example of this.”

Midwives offer a collaborative approach to childbirth. Women, in partnership with a certified nurse midwife, may elect to have a more natural approach to their pregnancy and childbirth or they may choose to use pain medication. Nurse midwives provide a sense of control for the pregnant patient over her birth experience. “The philosophy behind midwifery care is a great complement to Emerson’s newly-renovated Birthing Center,” she said. “What is really important is options. My hope is that serving as a nurse midwife, I can fill that need. I look forward to introducing to both the local community that Emerson serves, as well as the providers within our network, how a nurse midwife can fit into their patient’s plan for overall health. Women who may have a higher-risk pregnancy can continue with midwifery care with collaborative support from a Board-certified obstetrician as well.”

In addition to delivering babies, Perivolotis, who previously worked as a labor and delivery nurse at Emerson for ten years, provides annual gynecologic exams and care to adolescents and post-menopausal women.

Emerson offers acupuncture during labor, a tub for hydrotherapy, reiki, and aromatherapy. Doulas, who are trained to provide physical and emotional support during labor and delivery, are welcome. The nurses in Emerson’s labor and delivery unit provide one-on-one nursing care to all laboring patients.

Perivolotis will have office hours at the Westford Health Center (Route 110 in Westford) as well as in Concord. For more information, call 978-371-1396.
