5/4/09: General Surgeon joins Emerson Hospital

Dr. Brian T. Callahan, Jr., a general surgeon, recently joined Emerson Hospital.

For Dr. Callahan, who spent the past 20 years tending to acute care surgical patients, the opportunity at Emerson allows him to change the focus of his practice and to forge more meaningful connections. "What I like best about medicine is the relationships you develop,” said Dr. Callahan. “My work at Emerson will allow me to pay personal attention to my patients.”

A lifelong Massachusetts resident, Dr. Callahan earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. He is Board-certified in general surgery and has clinical interests in minimally-invasive surgery, including laparoscopic gallbladder and colon surgery, incisional hernia repair, and the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of breast issues.

Dr. Callahan joins Emerson at a time when the hospital recently completed significant investments in its surgical center, part of a $36-million initiative to enhance the patient experience in three key areas: surgery, obstetrics and interventional radiology. The project combined new construction with a series of innovative renovations and upgrades. The new Clough Surgical Center includes a dedicated private entrance; spacious, private pre-surgical and post-operating recovery rooms with serene wooded views; an expanded waiting area with its own kitchenette; a new post-anesthesia care unit (PACU); and physician/patient consultation rooms. The surgery project includes the construction of new operating suites, which feature new technology for minimally-invasive surgery and incorporate the use of sophisticated imaging systems.

Dr. Callahan’s office is located in suite 500 of the John Cuming Building at Emerson Hospital. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, call 978-287-3547.
