7/19/10: Engineer showcases passion for photography at Emerson Hospital
Dan Stone is living proof that left-brained, highly analytical people can also be creative and artistic. Stone is a software engineer with a passion for photography, hiking, and travel. Often, these three pursuits are combined, although much of his photographic work, particularly in black and white, has been done close to his home in Lexington.
His work has been exhibited at several locations in Worcester, as well as in Waltham, Lexington, Lincoln, Arlington, and Lowell. Starting August 15, his photography will be displayed at Emerson Hospital in an art show sponsored by the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary. His photographs can also be seen at www.dan-stone.com.
Stone’s interest in photography began as a teenager growing up in central Massachusetts. Inspired by the texture of old wood, Dan spent many weekend afternoons driving the back roads in search of weathered barns and gnarled trees. Since color was a distraction to the shapes and textures, his work concentrated on black and white to capture the essence of what he observed.
Time constraints and lack of a darkroom resulted in a 20-year hiatus from black and white photography. During that time, he did more color work, particularly when traveling or mountain-climbing. Many of the pictures he took while hiking have been published in calendars, magazines, and as book covers. About ten years ago, he rekindled his passion for black and white expression and once again found himself searching for form—this time frequently near his Lexington home.
