6/23/11: Emerson Hospital Auxiliary Run-Walk raises record amount
The Emerson Hospital Auxiliary recently held its 11th annual 5K Run-Walk for Cancer and Family Fun-Day. The event was jointly sponsored by The Thoreau Club and Marx Running of Acton. The Run-Walk drew almost 450 people and raised more than $42,000—the largest amount of money ever raised in the history of the Run-Walk. Mark Coddaire of Marx Running of Acton and Faith Pulis, president and CEO of The Thoreau Club, co-chaired the event.
The day of family fun included many new activities, including music, a “Tot-Trot”, a Kids’ Fun Run (a 1K run for children age 5-12, which drew more than 30 participants), swimming, tie-dye T-shirts, an inflatable obstacle course, and a barbeque.
“This was a fun-filled, multi-generational event that keeps on growing in participation, business partnerships, and donations from the community,” said Anne Lehmann, president of the Auxiliary. “We are grateful for the tremendous support we received from the community. Many thanks go to Mark Coddaire of Marx Running, who set the race course, The Thoreau Club, and to the more than 30 businesses and families who sponsored the event.”
Many business and families sponsored the event, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Bethke Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital. The Bethke Cancer Center was created to bring outstanding cancer specialists and facilities to the communities served by Emerson. By collaborating with Massachusetts General Hospital and Commonwealth Hematology-Oncology, the Center is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art technology to address the personal and physical needs of Emerson patients and their families. The Center is now in its 14th year of operation.
Funds raised from the Run-Walk allow the Bethke Cancer Center to continue to invest in technology, like the newest cancer-fighting weapon that the Center recently unveiled – a new linear accelerator, a technological marvel in cancer care that employs built-in CT scanning capability. The new linear accelerator delivers radiation with unsurpassed precision, hitting targets with minimal impact on healthy tissue.
