Diagnosis

The key to successful pain treatment often lies in pinpointing the cause. Emerson’s pain specialists perform a comprehensive evaluation, and MRI exams can often localize the source of the pain.

Treatment

Pain relief options include spinal stimulation, where a permanent, pacemaker-like device delivers pain-relieving impulses that reduce the sensation of pain. Physicians in the program are also skilled at managing cancer pain that can require specialized treatments. One approach uses a tiny, implantable device to deliver medicine directly to the spine, avoiding side effects such as nausea.

Alternative therapies for pain management

Emerson Hospital offers a wide array of complementary therapies for pain control. Also known as integrative therapies, complementary therapies are nonmedical treatments that augment standard medical care. Patients who use complementary therapies report less pain and reduced anxiety. Complementary therapies at Emerson include acupuncture, yoga, guided imagery, massage, music therapy, Reiki and Jin Shin Jyutsu, aromatherapy, and hypnobirthing.
