Pathology

Pathologists direct the clinical activities of each section of Emerson’s laboratory: chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, hematology, anatomic pathology and cytology. Emerson is a fully accredited comprehensive diagnostic facility.

Diagnosis

Pathologists provide and interpret laboratory test results to help diagnose disease. Pathologists dissect tissue specimens, examine slides, identify cancerous and benign cells, and aid surgeons by performing frozen sections on surgically removed tissue samples. They play an essential role in diagnosing cancer. Sophisticated laboratory analytics are available for the most complicated diagnostic procedures.

Treatment

Today, cancer treatment is tailored to each patient’s tumor. Pathologists identify attributes about each tumor that help oncologists to design the most effective treatment plan. Emerson’s pathologists use the most cutting-edge molecular tests available to aid in diagnosis and treatment.

Accreditations

Emerson’s pathology department is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA-88), the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
