Primary Care/Internal Medicine

Emerson Hospital offers a network of approximately 60 adult internal medicine physicians with offices in 11 communities. Internists, also known as primary care physicians, coordinate your health care and provide comprehensive care—physical examinations, routine health screenings and preventative care. They also diagnosis and treat many illnesses.

Finding the right doctor

Choosing an internist or primary care physician is one of the most important health care decisions you need to make. Your primary care physician is your most frequent point of contact for medical concerns. Because he or she will help guide you if more care may be necessary, it is vital to choose a doctor whom you respect, and who respects you and understands your health status. Other important considerations include background and expertise, ease of access for appointments and a convenient office location near your home or work.

Emerson’s internists refer patients who require additional care to one of the many highly qualified specialists on the Emerson Hospital medical staff, and when necessary, to an academic medical center.

Choosing the expertise you need

Many of the internists on the Emerson medical staff also have clinical interests or training in the following fields:

  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Geriatrics
  • Hematology and oncology
  • Infectious disease
  • Pulmonary medicine
  • Rheumatology
  • Women’s health
  • Wound care

There are several medical degrees associated with the term “Primary Care,” each with its own expertise and advantages. The best primary care doctor for your needs depends on your health and your personal preferences. Emerson’s physician referral service can help find the right doctor who meets your individual needs.
