Volunteering

Emerson Hospital has more than 525 adult and student volunteers representing 38 towns – more volunteers per bed than any other hospital in Massachusetts. In 2004, volunteers gave 76,922 hours of service to the hospital. Emerson’s 150 student volunteers alone contributed 11,840 hours of service.

The average adult volunteer gives over 150 hours to Emerson per year and approximately one quarter of our volunteers have served at the hospital for more than 10 years. These very special people work in 46 service areas, providing an invaluable service to Emerson.

The numbers are impressive. In 2004, the transport department and messenger service volunteers performed 92,635 trips. In addition, the hospital gift shop was open seven days a week, and completely staffed by volunteers.
