Birthing Center

When it is time to bring your new baby home, you will be seen by an obstetrician, and your baby will be seen by a pediatrician one more time—to ensure that both of you are healthy. A maternity nurse will provide you with discharge papers that include information about your postpartum care, as well as the care you both received while at the Birthing Center.

You will need to bring clothes to the hospital for your baby to wear home. It may be useful to bring several receiving blankets and clothing options to allow for changing weather conditions. We also recommend washing your baby’s clothes in a mild detergent, such as Dreft®, before you arrive at the Emerson.

Please do not forget that you must have an infant car seat to take your baby home. Many local police departments have a safety officer who can install the car seat for you or check to make sure you have installed the seat correctly.

If you choose to leave the Birthing Center for early discharge, you may have the option for a visiting nurse come to your home to check the health of you and your baby.

You will also be given information about Mom-to-Mom groups in your area. Many women find these groups extremely helpful to obtain important information and to establish a social network of mothers and babies close to your home.

And remember, Emerson Birthing Center nurses are available by telephone to answer any questions that may come up upon your return home.
