Emergency Medicine
The Emergency Department, open 24 hours a day, 365 days per year, is staffed by board certified emergency physicians and by nurses who have specialized training in emergency medicine. The department, which cares for approximately 37,000 patients per year is a fully-equipped, 22 bed facility with specialized treatment rooms for resuscitation, eye, ear, nose and throat problems, orthopedic injuries and obstetrical emergencies.
A clinical laboratory and comprehensive imaging facilities for diagnostic x-rays, ultrasound, CT scanning, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are rapidly accessible to the emergency department. Emerson Hospital’s 24-hour per day, in-hospital specialists include pediatricians, internists and anesthesiologists. Other specialists and primary care physicians are available on-call to consult, admit or provide follow-up care.
Emerson Hospital has been recently awarded designation as a Primary Stroke Service by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, meaning we have a stroke team on staff to diagnosis and treat stroke as soon as possible – because seconds count.
Patients requiring highly specialized tertiary care, such as burn unit or cardiac surgery, are treated and transported to the most appropriate tertiary facility either in the Advanced Life Support (ALS) Transfer Ambulance or by helicopter.
For more rapid treatment of less serious conditions, the newly built 6-bed Olsen Urgent Care Center is open during peak volume hours. Here, you will be cared for by the same highly trained emergency physicians, nurses and technicians that you would see in the main Emergency Department.
Unlike many other emergency departments in Massachusetts, in Emerson Hospital’s Emergency Department, you will always be seen by a physician.
