Emergency Medicine
Paramedics
Emerson Hospital is one of the few hospitals that maintain a staff of highly trained Paramedics. When you dial 911 in a medical emergency, your local Fire Department responds by sending a town-based ambulance staffed by emergency medical technicians (EMTs). They are trained to provide immediate assistance including the use of semi-automatic defibrillators to revive victims of sudden cardiac arrest. In critical situations, Emerson Hospital-based advanced life support (ALS) paramedics are also dispatched to augment the capabilities of the town-based EMT personnel. Functioning as a field extension of the emergency physician, Emerson paramedics provide on-site and in-transit tracheal intubation, and use of 12-lead electrocardiograms to rapidly identify victims of an acute heart attack.
