Expert Care, Genuine Concern

When your child is a patient at Emerson Hospital, both you and your child benefit from a comprehensive program of advanced pediatric care.

Emerson's pediatric experts - pediatricians, neonatologists, medical specialists, pediatric nurses, technicians and support staff - administer the most current technologies and treatments in caring for your child. At the same time, they remain sensitive to the emotional and psychological needs of children in all age groups and are respectful of your own expertise as a parent.

Emerson's pediatric program includes several components that are unique for a community hospital - 24-hour in-hospital coverage by pediatric hospitalists, community pediatric practices which provide around the clock coverage for their patients, a Special Care Nursery for ill newborns, the Pediatric Intervention Team and partnerships with the pediatric services at leading Boston teaching hospitals.

These and other innovations give you and your child immediate access to the very finest hospital care, conveniently located, close to home.

An Extra Measure of Care

The hospital supports your pediatrician's care with 24-hour coverage by a pediatric hospitalist. This extra measure of care, normally found only at major teaching hospitals, assures that your child can receive immediate, expert attention any time, day or night. Exceptionally close monitoring and continuous evaluation by the hospitalists of Emerson Pediatric Group allows Emerson to care for some ill children who might otherwise require transfer to a tertiary care center.

In Emerson's Emergency Department, your child benefits from the attention of two medical experts - a specialist in Emergency Medicine and a staff pediatrician who is always on call in the hospital.

All pediatric and emergency specialists are accustomed to handling pediatric emergencies and are sensitive to causes of illness that are specific to children.

In addition, many Emerson physicians, nurses and support personnel have completed advanced training in the care of very sick children, including certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

In addition, the Emerson medical staff includes many physician specialists with pediatric training and experience in such fields as anesthesiology (available on-site 24 hours a day), surgery, ophthalmology, cardiology, gastroenterology and many others.

Helping Your Child To Health

For the nurses and support personnel who staff Emerson's Pediatric Unit, your child's physical and emotional health are of paramount concern. They share years of experience in pediatric care and they encourage your participation in your child's care and recovery. As a parent, you are welcome on the unit 24 hours a day. A bed or other accommodation will be provided if you choose to stay overnight.

Emerson's Pediatric Unit includes private and semi-private patient rooms; an isolation room with a special ventilation system for preventing the spread of infectious disease; a brightly decorated playroom, stocked with a variety of age-appropriate toys and activities; and a separate treatment room.
