About Emerson's Lab Services
The clinical laboratory at Emerson operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. To assist in patient care, the Emerson lab provides accurate and timely information on blood, body fluids and other specimens, as well as consultation to the Emerson clinical staff.
The lab is comprised of six major clinical departments: chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, hematology/coagulation, comprehensive anatomic pathology/histology and cytology. The clinical staff is supplemented by three support departments: phlebotomy, specimen processing and laboratory administration/information systems. In addition, the blood bank has a blood donor program and is available for volunteer donors.
Emerson’s lab has four physicians specializing in pathology who direct the clinical activities of each section of the laboratory: chemistry, microbiology, blood bank, hematology, anatomic pathology and cytology.
In addition, the pathologists provide and interpret laboratory test results to help diagnose and treat diseases. They dissect tissue specimens, examine slides, identify cancerous and benign cells, and aide the surgeons by performing frozen sections on surgically removed tissue samples. Emerson pathologists also provide consultation on pathology reports from other hospitals.
Sophisticated laboratory analytics are available for the most complicated diagnostic procedures.
Professionally-staffed by medical technicians and technologists, the main laboratory is located within the hospital. The blood and specimen collection center, located at 747 Main Street next to the Breast Health Center - diagonally across Rt. 2 from Emerson Hospital - is open for specimen-collection Monday - Friday from 7:00 am - 6:45 pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 am - 2:15 pm. There, state-of-the-art instrumentation supports our skilled staff in providing the very best in laboratory testing. Specimen testing in all clinical areas is performed throughout the day and night.
In addition, the John Cuming Building blood collection center is open Monday - Friday from 8:30 am to 5:45 pm.
