Emerson Hospital Awarded High Marks for Patient Safety and Patients' Experience of Care

5/28/2015

Emerson Hospital was recently honored with high marks for patient safety and patients' experience of care by two national health organizations, The Leapfrog Group and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

In its Spring 2015 report, Emerson received an "A" - the highest patient safety grade, from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. Emerson has received "A" grades in prior years from The Leapfrog Group.

Emerson's safety score was calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel using publicly available data from more than 2,500 acute care hospitals nationwide on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. Hospitals were assigned an A, B, C, D, or F for their overall performance. Only 31% of all hospitals measured received an A grade. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently awarded Emerson Hospital 4 out of 5 stars for patients’ experience of care – the most stars given to any hospital in the Greater Boston area. Nearly 3,500 Medicare-certified acute care hospitals around the country were rated based on how well nurses and doctors communicated with patients; how responsive hospital staff were to patient needs; how clean and quiet hospital environments were; and how well patients were prepared for post-hospital settings.

In addition, Emerson's home care team received 4.5 stars out of 5 by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, one of the highest scores for home care in the country.  One of the first hospital-based home care organizations in Massachusetts, Emerson's Home Care has established a reputation for excellence. It provides a variety of health services to the community including nursing, rehabilitation, medical social work and home health aides. “Providing our patients with premium care in a warm and compassionate environment is what we are known for in the community," said Christine Schuster, president and CEO of Emerson Hospital. “We are proud to be recognized by The Leapfrog Group and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for giving patients the highest level of care when they are in the hospital and when they are recovering at home. We continue to invest in our teams, facilities, equipment and technology to ensure that all of Emerson's patients receive the highest standards of care throughout our outpatient and inpatient service areas."
