Endocrine surgery is a subspecialty of
general surgery that focuses primarily on diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands. These conditions include:
- Thyroid and parathyroid cancer
- Adrenal tumors
- Goiter (abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland)
- Graves’ disease (an immune system disorder that results in overproduction of thyroid hormones, or hyperthyroidism)
- Hashimoto’s disease (also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, a condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid, often leading to hypothyroidism, which is an underactive thyroid)
- Hyperparathyroidism, an abnormally high concentration of parathyroid hormone in the blood, resulting in weakening of the bones through loss of calcium

- Parathyroid surgery to remove one or all four parathyroid glands (parathyroidectomy)
- Thyroid surgery including thyroid lobectomy (removal of half the thyroid gland) and total thyroidectomy (removal of the entire thyroid gland)
