Quitting smoking is not as easy as it sounds. It often takes multiple attempts for people to quit and the most effective ways are with the support of others who are working to stop smoking too. Starting Monday, January 15, Emerson Hospital will be hosting a Freedom from Smoking® group clinic to help people learn how to overcome tobacco addictions and enjoy the benefits of better health, extra money and healthier relationships. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an individual’s risk of coronary heart disease drops to half that of a smoker’s just one year after they quit smoking.
The Freedom from Smoking clinics were established by the American Lung Association and are proven to be successful to help people stop smoking. Those who use the program are six times more likely to be smoke-free one year later than those who try to quit on their own. Participants will learn about lifestyle changes that make quitting easier, medicines that can help stop smoking, preparing for Quit Day, managing stress, avoiding weight gain, developing a new self-image and learning how to stay smoke-free. The eight clinics provide a supportive setting for adults to work through the quitting process.
Claire Rindenello, RRT, Pulmonary Rehabilitation Coordinator at Emerson Hospital, will lead the program. For more than 20 years, Claire has worked with people who have lung disease and is well-known for her compassionate approach to helping smokers quit the addiction.
The Freedom from Smoking clinics will meet for eight sessions from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at Emerson Hospital. Classes will be held in the Lovejoy Conference Room, located on the 4th floor of the hospital at 133 Old Road to Nine Acre Corner in Concord. The cost to participate is $100. Smokers age 18 and over who are interested in quitting are welcome to participate.
