Integrative Assessment & Treatment

Every patient seen at the Cantu Concussion Center will benefit from a range of expertise, treatment strategies, and established therapies—all under one roof.

Cantu Team Approach

Team Approach

The Cantu Concussion Center staff includes neurologists; physical, occupational, and speech therapists; and nurse practitioners all working together to help patients return to the lives they enjoyed prior to their injury.

Comprehensive Evaluation

Each patient is evaluated to address the severity of his or her injury. This includes a detailed history and review of information on the injury, current symptoms, conditions that may affect recovery, and past concussion history, as well as a complete neurological exam. When indicated, further testing may be done, including brain MRI, blood tests, and neuropsychological testing.

Baseline testing, done when healthy, can also aid in evaluation by helping doctors understand how the patient’s brain performed prior to an injury.

Individualized Treatment Plans

Center staff carefully map treatment plans for patients that focus on:

  • Therapeutic needs including cognitive, visual, speech, and vestibular therapy
  • Educating and empowering the patient to manage their symptoms independently
  • Compensatory strategies to facilitate success in home, school, work and community
 Integrative treatment

Full Range of Therapies

Our goal is to help patients make a full recovery using the latest therapies for concussive brain injuries.

  • Our concussion clinical specialists use specific manual therapy techniques to decrease muscle spasms and deep tension in order to decrease many of the symptoms associated with post-concussion syndrome.
  • We also focus on a variety of exercises that help strengthen and stretch the postural muscles to restore normal muscle functioning, as well as strengthen specific sports-related musculature.
  • We offer cognitive therapies to address problems with attention, memory, processing speed, word-retrieval, executive functioning and time management.
  • We also provide ocular therapy for those affected with visual disturbances.
  • Complementary therapies like massage and acupuncture are also available to help with relaxation and pain management.

Return to Learning Protocol

Whether due to symptoms or the need for cognitive rest, concussive brain injuries can keep students from their classes and studies. Our physicians and cognitive and visual therapists work with the athlete/patient, parents, teachers, and school nurses to develop a plan after an injury that allows a patient’s brain to rest, but gets him or her back to school as fast and as safely as possible.

Return to Play Protocol

Dr. Cantu’s “Return to Play” guidelines have become an integral part of the care received by athletes. These guidelines classify concussions by grade and include recommendations for how to handle a player’s injury and downtime. Using these guidelines, center staff work with patients and parents to plan a safe return to sport after a concussive brain injury.

Follow-up and Support

Once the athlete/patient’s symptoms have resolved and he or she is cleared to return to activity, our support does not end there. Our team is available for support and follow-up as needed. Injury risk assessments and transitional return to play programs, as well as recommendations for ancillary therapies, can be provided.
