People recovering from COVID-19 can experience a variety of symptoms — general fatigue, shortness of breath, decreased blood oxygen levels, increased risk of blood clotting, and cognitive deficits due to the long term oxygen deprivation. The care team with our COVID-19 recovery clinic at Emerson’s Clough Family Center for Rehabilitative and Sports Therapies helps patients recovering from COVID-19 understand their symptoms and work through their limitations to help them move beyond the virus.

The program is designed both for patients recovering from a hospital stay as well as those who did not require hospitalization but are recovering from COVID-19 and bed rest-related impairments. The goal of the program is to address the physical and cognitive decline that impacts strength, cardiovascular endurance, joint mobility, speech, swallowing, and cognition.

The team is comprised of physical, occupational, and speech therapists who have unique experience working with COVID-19 patients in the hospital and during a patient’s transition to an outpatient setting. Their deep understanding of a patient’s progression and symptoms during recovery led to the development of a model of care for patients with COVID-19 related complications.

Evaluation and treatment options include in-clinic and telehealth appointments based on the patient’s need and health risk. Patients can be referred to the program from their primary care provider or specialist.
