Support Group setting

If you or a loved one are grappling with addiction, Emerson has addiction recovery programs staffed by behavioral health experts who are known for their experience and compassion. They specialize in working with people to help prevent relapse and provide long-term coping strategies. Emerson Hospital offers addiction recovery programs, classes, and support groups. These resources include:

ADDICTION RECOVERY PROGRAM (ARP)

Our full- and half-day programs offer comprehensive individual and group treatment for adults who are striving to overcome substance use disorders, including alcohol, prescription drugs, heroin, cocaine, and marijuana.

PARTIAL HOSPITALIZATION FULL DAY PROGRAM (PHP)

Our PHP program provides an intensive, therapeutic environment using evidence-based strategies for patients who do not need 24-hour hospitalized care but will benefit from more structure than an outpatient treatment program. The primary goal is to help patients heal from addiction and empower them with tools to manage their conditions moving forward. The PHP program meets weekdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Emerson Hospital.

What to Expect During a PHP Stay

PHP treatment includes a full day, similar to 24/7 hospitalized treatment, but patients go home at the end of each day. They do not stay overnight at Emerson. Care includes:

  • Group therapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Wellness-focused activities including meditation and mindfulness
  • Psychotherapy
  • Introduction to SMART Recovery and Alcoholics Anonymous
  • Introduction to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
  • Motivational interviewing

For more information, call 978-287-3520.

HALF-DAY INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT PROGRAM (IOP)

Half-day IOP treatment is a bridge between the more intensive partial hospitalization program and traditional outpatient treatment and therapy. The program was developed using evidenced-based treatment methods by behavioral health experts at Emerson who have years of experience working with patients to help them recover from addictions. Practicing the highest standards of care, the half-day IOP consists of two groups per day and provides opportunities to use recovery skills within the safety of a structured clinical environment. Treatments include:

  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Introduction to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
  • Wellness-focused activities
  • Introduction to SMART Recovery and Alcoholics Anonymous
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Aftercare planning and case management

The program aims to prepare patients for a successful life in recovery. The program meets on the campus of Emerson Hospital and offers patients a choice of two sessions during the weekdays: 9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Patients are required to attend a minimum of three times per week.

How to Know Which Program Is Right For You?

Consulting an experienced mental health professional is the best way to determine the optimal treatment for your care. PHP is a step down in intensity from a 24/7 hospitalization program. IOP is a step down in intensity from a PHP program and provides more care than outpatient therapy programs. You and your clinician decide on which option is right for you during your intake appointment.
