Parkinson's Disease, Fall prevention, and the Role of OT
Presented by Caleb Durand, OTR/L and Amanda Grimner, OTR/L

Individuals with Parkinsons Disease are at increasing risk for falls and functional decline. We will review the many factors related to Parkinson's disease that increase fall risk, discuss practical strategies to increase home safety and prevent falls, as well as the unique role of Occupational Therapy in assisting clients to maintain their independence and increase their safety in their day-to-day activities. We will provide an overview of restorative and compensatory interventions that OTs employ in working with this population, including adaptive equipment, assistive devices, and the benefits of Parkinson specific exercises to maintain and improve balance, coordination, postural control and overall function.
