Dr. Robert C. Cantu Concussion Center at Emerson Hospital Receives Approval for State-Wide Concussion Training Program from Massachusetts Department of Public Health

1/9/2017

The Dr. Robert C. Cantu Concussion Center at Emerson Hospital announced today that it has received approval by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) to provide  annual concussion awareness training for public middle and high school coaches, nurses, athletic directors, marching band directors, student athletes and parents in the state. Due to the increase in concussions suffered by student athletes, Massachusetts’ state law requires annual concussion awareness training for groups and individuals involved with middle and high school sports. The Cantu Concussion Center has developed an innovative, interactive training program called CANTU – an abbreviation for Concussion Awareness Neurological Training and Understanding. The training is provided at no cost to public middle and high schools throughout Massachusetts and fulfills the state requirement.

“We are very pleased to have received approval by the MDPH for our concussion training program,” said Dr. Robert C. Cantu, the Center’s Medical Director and Director of Clinical Research, and one of the world’s leading experts on concussions.  “Our team of concussion and head trauma experts has created a program that is highly individualized and interactive, resulting in greater awareness and understanding of concussions, which will lead to improved outcomes for student athletes who suffer head trauma.” Each year, clinicians with the Cantu Concussion Center diagnose and treat hundreds of student athletes for concussions.

The CANTU training modules were developed for school staff and parents and students. Topics include Truths about Concussions, How to Recognize a Concussion, Signs/Symptoms to Observe, What to Do if a Concussion Occurs, Concussion Rehabilitation Options, Returning to Play, Safety Options and State Regulations. The CANTU training is now available to public middle and high schools.
