Dr. Inger-Marie Pu, Pediatric Hospitalist, Honored as 2017 Physician Quality Champion

11/6/2017

At Emerson Hospital’s annual Physician Recognition Dinner held recently, Inger-Marie Pu, MD, Director of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, received the 2017 Physician Quality Champion Award. A pediatric hospitalist at Emerson since 1994, Dr. Pu has dedicated her career to continually improving patient care.  She is a hospital-based pediatrician who works with infants and children in Emerson’s pediatric unit, newborn nursery, special care nursery, delivery room and emergency department.

Her commitment to patient quality and safety focuses on all pediatric patients, but most notably on premature and ill newborns who are born at Emerson. Under her leadership, the pediatric hospitalist program at Emerson has grown over the past several years as the team cares for more patients. With her focus on patient care and safety, Dr. Pu enhanced simulation training at Emerson to include work with realistic preterm infant mannequins to train clinicians on the latest resuscitation techniques for the tiniest patients. She works closely with nursing to institute new protocols and continuously improve patient care. Often returning to her young patients’ bedsides after her shift has ended, Dr. Pu is a wonderful listener and incredibly attentive to families.

“Dr. Pu is an inspiring physician and a wonderful person whose dedication to our youngest patients is exceptional,” said Christine Schuster, President and CEO of Emerson Hospital. “With her focus on patient safety and innovative approaches to caring for young patients and their families, Emerson has become the hospital of choice for families in the community. We are very proud to have her on our team.”

"I am honored to receive the Physician Quality Champion Award, it is humbling to be recognized for my work with our young patients," said Dr. Pu. "At Emerson, we have excellent support for our patients, including devoted pediatric-trained nurses and our renowned Pediatric Intervention Team, which are integral to the excellent care of our patients. With our focus on high quality care with a compassionate touch, Emerson is uniquely able to make a positive impact on our young patients and their families.”

Dr. Pu received her medical degree from the University of Bergen in Norway and completed her pediatric residency at The Boston Floating Hospital for Infants and Children. She is board-certified in pediatrics and is a long-time resident of Winchester.
