Welcome

Welcome to our blog, where you can learn about your weight loss options and the wonderful team at the Emerson Hospital Center for Weight Loss. Our comprehensive program provides all the expertise and support needed by patients who decide to have weight loss surgery. That is our total focus.

We are located in a comfortable setting at Emerson Hospital’s Center for Specialty Care in Concord, that is specifically designed for those who struggle with their weight. Our team includes board-certified surgeons, a nurse practitioner, physician assistants, dietitians and a mental health practitioner.

Our program has been designated by the American College of Surgeons as a Level 1A Accredited Bariatric Center of Excellence, and we were named a Blue Distinction Center+ by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, for providing the highest quality bariatric surgery care at a reasonable cost.

We're here to help—not judge

We provide outstanding care to those seeking weight loss surgery. Since our program began in 2012, it has established a track record of impressive outcomes. We are now one of the largest program in the state.  However, we are most proud of the way our staff cares for our patients—individuals who have struggled with the societal judgment that often accompanies obesity. Our staff has created a supportive, patient-centered environment, and our patients quickly discover that we’re here to help—not judge.

It’s important to know that obesity is now recognized as a disease, and over time can have profound impacts on a patient’s life span, health problems, and day to day quality of life.  We understand that the decision to have surgery to treat one’s weight is a big decision.  However, for the majority of patients who do not succeed with diet and exercise to lose weight and keep it off, surgery is often the only real option available for them to get healthy and to avoid all of the consequences that obesity can have.  For many, these procedures do not represent the ”easy way out” but rather the only way out.  In addition, the majority of our patients experience important improvements in their quality of life as a result of their weight loss after surgery.  Surgery is fundamentally different than diet and exercise and has been shown in many studies to provide very significant and durable weight loss results for years.  The procedures that we offer are now considered very low risk and recovery for them is easier than it has ever been.  Insurance usually covers these procedures, and our team will work with you to help get you through the approval process.

If you’re interested in finding out more about surgery as an option for treating your weight, the first step is to attend one of our weight loss surgery information sessions, which are held weekly at a variety of locations in the area. At each session, we review:

  • The problem of obesity and its consequences

  • The rationale for considering surgery to treat your weight

  • Who is a candidate for obesity surgery

  • The procedures we offer and their risks and benefits

You can call our office at 978-287-3532 or go online to emersonhospital.org/clinical-services/weight-loss-surgery/information-sessions to find out more about getting scheduled to attend an information session.
