Volunteering with the Auxiliary provides our intergenerational membership opportunities to connect with each other during fun social events and also provides a meaningful way to give back to the community through educational, fundraising and community programs. Join or volunteer with the Auxiliary today.

The Auxiliary’s efforts also support the community by:

Enhancing the patient experience

From handcrafting teddy bears that comfort our youngest patients and hanging art to create a warm and caring environment, to funding state-of-the-art facilities and advanced medical equipment, the Auxiliary strives to improve the patient experience in all areas.

Increasing awareness of hospital services

The Auxiliary holds special events for members and their guests in order to spread the word about Emerson Hospital’s wide range of high-quality healthcare services. These events include presentations at coffees, luncheons and evening gatherings.

Hosting programs that inform and educate

The Auxiliary offers programs to our community that feature Emerson Hospital’s well-respected medical professionals who share their expertise on current health and wellness topics.

Funding important initiatives to enhance care

Through the Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts, we’ve enabled the hospital to purchase technology for real-time communication among departments, cardiac rehabilitation equipment and programs, state-of-the-art 3D mammography, nursing education, and more.

Notably, recent Auxiliary contributions have supported:

  • The Clough Family Center for Rehabilitative and Sports Therapies
  • The Orchid iPad rounding tool (on CipherHealth platform) used to survey a patient's satisfaction level while in the hospital
  • The Employee Assistance Fund

The Auxiliary’s rich history

Throughout the years, the Auxiliary has contributed significantly to Emerson Hospital:

  • At its founding in the 1920s, the Auxiliary raised critical funds to keep Concord’s 14-bed hospital operational
  • During the years of the Great Depression, the Auxiliary mended hospital linens and solicited donations to keep the hospital’s food pantry shelves full
  • Auxilians filled personnel shortages created by World War II by becoming nurse aides, washing dishes and tending to patient rooms
  • During the 1950s, the Auxiliary introduced a mobile gift cart and a book cart for patients. In addition, the Auxiliary initiated the Auxiliary Education Scholarship, designed to assist hospital employees in furthering their skills.
  • The Auxiliary funded the hospital’s first permanent gift shop and coffee shop in 1961
  • Auxiliary volunteers began to craft puppets to give joy and comfort to Emerson’s pediatric patients in the 1960s; this hugely successful project still exists today, providing handcrafted teddy bears
  • Auxilians use their fundraising capabilities to support important hospital programs through the purchase of items such as an EKG machine and a defibrillator
  • In the 1970s, the Auxiliary introduced a series of educational coffees designed to offer the community information on health-related topics
